Edgar Baker, Formerly of Ashford, AL. passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in Pensacola, FL. where he had resided for the past several years.  Mr. Baker was predeceased by his parents, Obie and Era Garner Baker, three sisters and two brothers.  His survivors, in addition to his wife, Gwen, include seven sisters; two daughters, Carol Humphrey (Omar) and Sheila Baker, of Pensacola, FL.; and one son, Neil Baker of Mobile, AL.; as well as three grandsons, Brian Humphrey, Josh Baker (Natalie), and Zachary Baker (Allyson), and four great frandchildren.


Mr. Baker, was born in Barbour County, AL. June 29, 1922, and was a army Veteran of WWII, serving as a communications specialist in the 59th Infantry Battalion of the 13th Armored “Black Cat” Division.  He and Gwen met while Edgar was stationed at Camp Bowie, TX. and were married August 21, 1945. Following an Honorable Discharge from the Army while at Camp Beale, CA. he returned to Alabama and became an employee with Alabama Power Co. until he retired almost 36 years later. Bored with retirement, Mr. Baker started his own electrical business, serving the Ashford area for many years.


Edgar was a former member of several civic and business organizations, including Ashford Lions Club and VFW.  He was a Free Mason for over 50 years, as well as former deacon at Wayside Baptist.


The family will receive friends at Wayside Baptist Church, 901 N. Broadway St. Ashford, at 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2015, immediately followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Keith Johnson and Rev. Adam Habbard officiating.  Interment will be at Ashford City Cemetery, with Kendall Glover directing.


Active pallbearers: Greg Tate, John Adams, Jeremy Smith, Jason Whitehurst, Sammy Hicks, David Cochran.


Honorary pallbearers: Past and present Deacons of Wayside Baptist Church and members of Ashford Masonic Lodge 493.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Edgar’s memory to Wayside Baptist Church, P.O. Box 468, Ashford AL. 36312
