Elizabeth Hortense Barnes


Hortense Barnes, age 86, of Dothan, formerly of Birmingham and Montgomery, AL passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015


Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Dothan with Dr. Johnny Fain and Dr. James Moebes officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Following lunch at FBC Parlor, burial will be at Adoniram Baptist Church, 6963 County Road 65, Shorterville, AL 36373Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Adoniram Baptist Church Building Fund or Cemetery Fund.


Miss Barnes was born in Henry County, AL to the late Joshua Franklin Barnes and Mamie Rosson Pearce Barnes. After graduation from Abbeville High School, Miss Barnes entered Alabama College, now the University of Montevallo, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Secondary Education and was President of the Gamma Chapter of Kappa Mu Epsilon. She taught high school mathematics before enrolling in Woman’s Missionary Training School, now Carver School of Missions and Social Work. As a student of WMUTS, she earned a Master of Arts in Religious Education from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky.


Miss Barnes began her professional ministry as office secretary in the Youth Department of Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union, Auxiliary to the Alabama Baptist State Convention. She spent the next 31 years in Birmingham where she served as Minister of Education at Fairfield First Baptist Church for 8 years, pastor’s secretary and assistant at Ruhama Baptist Church for 3 years and Mountain Brook Baptist Church for 20 years. In 1986, she returned to Montgomery to become the Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. In this position, she was elected as Recording Secretary of the Alabama Baptist State Convention. Miss Barnes was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity degree in recognition of her work among Alabama Baptist Churches.


 Upon retirement, she moved to Dothan where she became an active member of First Baptist Church. She helped to initiate and coordinate an intercessory prayer ministry. She was an active and supportive member of Women on Mission as well as a devoted member of her Sunday School class, the OWLS (Older Women Learning and Serving).


In addition to her parents, Miss Barnes was preceded in death by her brothers, Golden Barnes, John Barnes, Gordon Barnes and Frank Barnes; and her sisters, Daisy Thomas, Mamie Ruth Folsom, and Sarah Barnes.


She is survived by her brothers, Charles Barnes of New Port Richey, FL, Marvin Barnes and James Lawrence Barnes (Ann), all of Shorterville, AL, Fred Barnes (Martie) of Lenoir, NC; her sister, Ann Thomason (James) of Middleburg, FL as well as her beloved nieces and nephews.


Pallbearers will be Jerry Barnes, Jerome Barnes, Young Folsom, Dale Barnes, Pete Barnes and Bob Waters.


Honorary pallbearers will be her Sunday School Class.


A special thanks to her caregivers, Kathy and Young Folsom, Linda and Bob Waters, Pam and Jim Thomas and the entire staff on Hall 5 of Extendicare.
