Elvin H. “Woody” Underwood of Enterprise, AL passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 at his home. He was 81.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, November 24, 2014 at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Minister Keith Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 am until service time. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: Wiregrass Christian Academy, 209 W. College St., Enterprise, AL 36330.
Woody was born in Ballinger, TX. After graduating from the University of Texas, he entered the Flight School program in the Army. While at Ft. Rucker, he met and married his wife, Esta.
After completing his Masters’ Degree, he spent his career in City Management, Budgeting and Finance, and Management Consulting in municipalities and governmental agencies throughout the southeast. Woody’s most important work throughout his life has been in God’s church. He especially enjoyed working with the young boys training program. Woody and Esta retired and returned to Enterprise 15 years ago.
The family wishes to express its sincere thanks to their loving church family for all the many kindnesses shown during the past several months.
The family would also like to recognize the special care and love given by all involved with Gentiva Hospice, and also to Dr. David Rhyne who has helped so much since the beginning of Woody’s illness.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Loy Underwood; sister, Polly Long; daughter, Jaina Underwood.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Esta Peacock Underwood, Enterprise, AL; son, Harley Underwood, Level Plains, AL; brothers, Jo Ed Underwood (Jean), Grapevine, TX, James R. Underwood (Dorine), Carrollton, TX; nieces, Charlotte St. Martin, NY, NY, Diann Long, California, Linda Jorganson, Arlington, TX; nephews, Bruce Underwood (Karen), Grapevine, TX, Gary Underwood (Marie), Seattle, WA, Kenny Underwood (Aissa), Steve Underwood (Tina); cousins, Margie Howell, Grand Prairie, TX, Melba Hallmark, Grand Prairie, TX.
