Florence R. Gaines, 90, of Dothan passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013 at a local hospital.


Graveside services will be held 11 am Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Dothan City Cemetery with Rev. Jim Harbert officiating and Robert Byrd directing. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Save-A-Pet, P.O. Box 9323, Dothan, AL, 36304.


Mrs. Gaines was born February 13, 1923 in Manchester, New Hampshire and lived the early part of her life in Presque Isle, Maine. She graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1941 then met and married Frank Moss Gaines, Jr. in 1943 in Dothan. She volunteered with the Girls Scouts and was the first recipient of the Harry Hall Award which is now known as the Volunteer of the Year award. For many years she oversaw the hospitality for volunteers of the National Peanut Festival. Mrs. Gaines was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.


Survivors include her son Frank Gaines, III (Cathy) of Dothan; her daughter Sara Gaines of Dothan; grandchildren, Caroline Harville and Frank Moss Gaines, IV; a great grandson Ellis Harville; several nieces and nephews also survive.
