Francis M. Fairchild, Sr. 1SGT (Ret.) was called to eternal rest on August 26th, 2015 surrounded in love by his family at home.  He was 86.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Enterprise with family friend Reverend Jim Duhaime officiating.  Following the service, 1SGT Fairchild (Ret.) will be laid to rest by his brothers in arms with full military honors in Daleville Memorial Gardens.  Friends are welcomed for visitation with the family on Monday, August 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Sorrells Funeral Home in Enterprise.


Francis “Mel” Fairchild was born March 30th, 1929 in Paxton, Illinois to the late Frank & Helen Varner Fairchild.  He was the 1st of three children born to his parents, Frank & Helen.


On September 27th, 1948 he enlisted inthe United States Army in Gary Indiana.  Shortly afterwards, Hazel Fairchild joined him in marriage in Boston, Texas on January 10th, 1950.  He proudlyserved during the Korean War&two tours of the Vietnam War.  While serving,healso earned the CCM 4th award.  1SGT Fairchild retired after over 22 years of dedicated service to our country in the Armed Services.The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest.  Following his retirement he partnered with John H. Anderson LTC (Ret.) in 1971 to establish the Daleville High School Junior ROTC program. His dedication to this program created a legacy within the Daleville community that has provided education & leadership to students since its inception.  He retired from Daleville High School in 1992.  The benefits of the program he created with John H. Anderson LTC (Ret.) continue to remain prevalent today within the grateful Daleville community.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Don Fairchild; his sister, Doris Forensic; and his son-in-law, Hartwell Hubble.


Francis M. Fairchild leaves to cherish his wonderful memories; his loving wife of 65 years, Hazel Fairchild of Daleville, AL; his 2 sons: Francis M. Fairchild, Jr. (Charlotte) of Daleville, AL. and Terry Fairchild (Laura) of Gonzales, LA; his 2 daughters: Gail Hubble of Enterprise, AL. and Annette Thorpe (Rick) of Tuttle, OK; 6 wonderful grandchildren and 8 beautiful great-grandchildren.


The family would like to thank the staff at Daysprings Hospice from Enterprise, Alabama for the great care & comfort that they provided to Francis M. Fairchild, Sr. 1SGT (Ret.) during his passing.
