Franklin Delano Powers, 81, died peacefully at his home in Cowarts, AL on Saturday, August 09, 2014.


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, at Bluff Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Singletary officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10:00 until 10:45. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Bluff Springs Baptist Church, 1990 Bluff Springs Road, Cowarts, AL 36321.


Mr. Powers was born in Luverne, AL, January 30, 1933 and grew up in Ozark, AL. He served in the National Guard and was called to active duty in South Korea. He continued to serve in the National Guard following his deployment and later served in the Air National Guard. In 1952, he moved to Ashford, AL to set up a new company which became Wex Tex and worked there as a sewing machine mechanic for 46 years before his retirement. He loved his family, fishing and boating. He was a Master Mason for 50 years with the Ashford Lodge and was a member of Bluff Springs Baptist Church.


He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Powers, his mother, Thelma Lisenby Jackson, His step-father, Fernie Jackson and his sisters, Martha Wright (Ed) and Joan Peel.


Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jeanette Coe Powers, Cowarts; a daughter, Vivian Smith (Larry), Springville, AL; a son, Van Frank Powers and friend, Wanda Sanders, Cowarts; three grandchildren, Ravyn Burkett, Wesley Burkett and Elisha Dozier; three great grandchildren, Alexis Burkett, Anthony Burkett and Cullen Dozier; brother in law, Quay Peel;  sister-in-law, Mary Ann Vanlandingham (Bill); several nieces and nephews also survive.
