George Aloysius Derrer, 91, a resident of Dothan passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Wesley Manor.


A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 20, 2015 at St. Columba Catholic Church Chapel with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends following the services.


Mr. Derrer was born January 6, 1924 in Queens County, New York and lived the early part of his life in Huntington, NY and was a volunteer firefighter in Merrick, NY. He was a Veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy. He moved to the Panama Canal Zone in 1959 and was employed with the Panama Canal Company as a civil servant for 21 years until his retirement in 1980. He has resided in Dothan for the past 35 years and was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge. Mr. Derrer was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Derrer; his brother, Wallace Derrer; and his sister, Edna Smith.


Survivors include his daughters, Patricia Roach, Gail (Robert) Norton, and Nancy (Gregg) Newman; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; 5 nieces and nephews.
