George William Scott


George William Scott, a longtime resident of Newton, died Sunday afternoon, February 15, 2015 at his home following an extended illness with his family at his side. He was 62.


Funeral Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Pastor Gregory Speight and Pastor Jason Duren officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday prior to service time.


Mr. Scott was born January 26, 1953 in Toledo, Ohio and moved to Newton at an early age. He served in the U.S. Army for ten years and worked at Ft. Rucker for fifteen years before retiring as fire captain. He later was employed with Southeast Alabama Medical Center for several years as a security guard prior to his recent illness. Mr. Scott was a member of Victory Family Church.


He is survived by his wife of thirty years, Viney Scott of Newton; five children, Charles, Tony, Karen, Debbie and Hannah; twelve grandchildren; a brother, Cedric and a sister, Donna; several nieces and nephews also survive.
