Gloria A. Thornton of Samson passed away at Wiregrass Medical Center on Friday, April 18, 2014.  She was 71.  The family will hold a celebration of life service at Mrs. Thornton’s home, 203 S. Wise St., Samson, Alabama at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014. 


Mrs. Thornton was born in Samson on January 30, 1943 to the late Jefferson Reed Cubstead and Queeny Mae Rodgers Cubstead.  Prior to her retirement she was a main cook at the Big/Little Store and Hobo Pantry Store in Samson for many years.  She also served as a volunteer for R.S.V.P where she delivered meals to shut-ins in the Samson area.  Mrs. Thornton originally went to school for only eight years, but she received her GED at the age of fifty-six.  It was an accomplishment she was very proud to achieve.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymon T. Thornton; son, David Lee Jones; step-son, Donnie Jones; brother, Phillip Wayne Cubstead; sister, Evelyn Clodean Tidwell; and brother-in-law, Benny Tidwell.


She is survived by three sons, Frank Jones of Samson, Ronnie Jones (Julie) of Kinston and Oscar Thornton (Mandy) of Ashford; three daughters, Patty Phillips of Enterprise, Rita Cawley (Wayne) of New Brockton and Rachel Foster (Richard Prior) of Mobile; eight step-daughters, Rhonda Tice of Dothan, Marie Webster (David), Gayle Bell (Dewayne) both of Slocomb, Roselyn Fuller (Joe) of Mobile, Becky Webb of Slocomb, Betty White, Nina Ferratti and Janie Stokes, all of Florala; eighteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; her loving caregiver, Cassandra Zass; and several nieces and nephews.
