Hazel Bowen Kirkland, 93, much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on June 6, 2013 in Jacksonville, FL where she lived since 2010.

She was born in Newville, AL on October 31, 1919, to Cora Bond Bowen and George Clayton Bowen. She was the oldest of 3 children. She grew up in Newville and moved to Dothan, AL at 18 to attend business school and worked at Singer Sewing Company. In 1941, she married Julian Wesley Kirkland who worked at E.R. Porter Hardware. They were married for 49 years until his death in 1991.While raising her family she was the Dietician at Girard Junior High for 20 years where she worked alongside her staff to prepare meals from scratch. She was a faithful member of Lafayette Street/Greystone United Methodist Church for almost 70 years. She remained very active as she was involved in serving her Lord in many church ministries throughout the years by providing food or just being there for those in need. Being with family was her greatest source of joy. Sitting in a boat or at the end of the dock fishing were her happiest pastimes. Getting away to Compass Lake was like a peaceful sanctuary away from the world. On meeting her for the first time you were likely to be shown pictures of her grandchildren and her fish.

A service of celebration will be held on Sunday, June 9th at 2 P.M. at Greystone United Methodist Church, Dothan, AL. Burial will follow at Dothan City Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the following: Greystone United Methodist, Dothan, AL; Southside United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, FL; or Northeast Florida Community Hospice, Jacksonville, FL.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 6 P.M. Saturday, June 8, 2013.

Her sister, Ruth Bowen Nichols, and brother, George Clayton Bowen, and half-sister, Opal Hartley Smith predeceased her.

She is survived by her foster sister, Mavis Bowen Roney, Newville, AL. She is also survived by 2 children, Wesley Clayton Kirkland (Joan) and Rebecca Kirkland Garner (Woody) all of Jacksonville, FL. She has 6 beloved grandchildren, Kimberly Ann Kirkland, Atlanta, GA; Courtney Kirkland Bieger (Laird), Greenwich, CT; Wesley Clayton Kirkland, Jr. Jacksonville, FL; Stephanie Garner Price (Ralph), Jacksonville, FL; Betsy Garner Smith (Brian), Perry, GA; and Lindsay Garner Cottrill (Geoff), Tacoma, WA and 7 great-grandchildren, Riley, Ansley and Tate Bieger; Whit and Abby Price; and Kerrington and Hayes Smith.
