            Howard E. Vinson, a resident of Headland, died Tuesday morning, August 11, 2015, at his home. He was 90.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 13, 2015, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Headland “Benevolence Fund”, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.


            Mr. Vinson was born and reared in Headland, son of the late J. Zeamer Vinson and Edna Earle Gamble Vinson. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in June 1942 as an Apprentice Seaman and served twenty years on active duty before retiring in 1967 as a Lieutenant Commander. Mr. Vinson was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. During his military career, he also served four years in the National Guard. He returned to Headland in 1967 and later graduated from Troy University with a BS Degree in History. Mr. Vinson was instrumental in bringing the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) to Headland High School in 1971, and was the first Naval Science Instructor at both Headland High School and Abbeville High School.


            Mr. Vinson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland having served as Chairman of the Benevolence Fund and as a member of the Jack Bridges Sunday School Class. A member of the Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge No. 529, he formerly served as Worshipful Master of the Headland Masonic Lodge No. 438 where he received a fifty-year pin in 1998. Mr. Vinson served three terms as a member of the Headland City Council, served as Chairman of the City of Headland Water Board, and was a former member and chairman of the Wiregrass Mental Health Board. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Rosa Campbell Vinson, and a brother, Heywood Vinson.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Montez Nelson Vinson, Headland; a daughter, Jane Vinson Solomon (Dr. Charles P. Solomon), Birmingham; a son, Daniel E. Vinson (Linda Vinson), Headland; two step-daughters, Wanda Fischer (Sam), and Linda Reid; three sisters, Robbie Bush Adams, Headland; Zelda White, Abbeville; and Sara Ham, Headland; a granddaughter, Katie Solomon Burnett (Brian), Birmingham; four step-grandchildren, Michael Childers, Stephen Fischer, Jason Reid and Amy Reid; two great-grandchildren, Jason Burnett and Campbell Burnett.
