Hubert Givens


 Hubert Givens, a longtime resident of Dothan, died Tuesday night, May 6, 2014 in Gainesville, GA. He was 90.


 


Funeral Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with his nephew, Rev. Cliff Knight and Rev. John Sanders officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time on Friday.


 


In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be made to Halcyon Hospice Foundation, 1435 Haw Creek Circle, E., Suite 402, Cumming, GA, 30041 or Greystone United Methodist, P O Box 1506, Dothan, AL 36302.


 


Mr. Givens was born February 23, 1924 in Geneva County, AL and spent the early years of his life in Geneva County and Columbus, GA. He was a graduate of Slocomb High School, attended Riley Business College and attended many classes pertaining to the U.S. Postal Service.


 


At the age of 16, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. From 1940-1945 he served in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters as a Staff Sergeant in the Medical Corp. Mr. Givens was employed with the U.S. Postal Service in numerous capacities including letter carrier, customer service representative and vehicle operations and maintenance assistant. He also served as OIC in several surrounding U.S.P.S. offices and evaluated efficiencies of U.S.P.S. offices before retiring as Post Master.


 


Mr. Givens enjoyed spending time with his family, dancing and fishing. He was loving, kind and thoughtful. He exhibited strong Christian beliefs that guided him throughout his life always unselfish and considerate of others.  He was a member of the National League of Postmasters and the NAPUS. He was a longtime member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church now Greystone United Methodist Church.


 


He is predeceased by his wife, Grace Wilson Givens, parents, Benjamin Crawford Givens and Alcie Miller Givens and a brother, Benjamin Houston Givens.


 


Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Porter (Orval) of Gainesville, GA and Rexine Lee of Dothan, AL; grandchildren, Amy Hughes (Scotlon), Libby Baker (Jerry), Jeff Lee and Steve Lee (Carol); eight great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; a sister, Luna Dunaway of Slocomb, AL; several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.


 


The family would like to thank Somerset Assisted Living of Dothan, Dogwood Forest Assisted Living of Gainesville, GA and Halcyon Hospice of Gainsville, GA for the special care given to Mr. Givens.
