James Lamar Smith, 78, a resident of Newton passed away Tuesday December 23, 2014 at Wesley Manor.


Memorial Services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Bimbo Turner officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Sunset Reception Center.


Mr. Smith was born January 19, 1936 in Hazlehurst, Georgia and spent the early part of his life in Tampa, Florida. He moved to Newton in 1969 where he owned and operated J.L. Smith & Son Trucking Co. for 55 years until he medically retired in 2009.


Survivors include his wife, Penny Smith; his son, Jamie L. Smith; brothers, George (Brenda) Smith and Stacey (Doris) Smith; brothers-in-law, John (Mary) Hoffmann and George (Belinda) Hoffmann; a sister-in-law, Belinda (Larry) Golden; special nieces, Claudette Plath and Morgan Golden; special friends, Wayne Sims and Mary Hall.
