HEADLAND. . .James Robert Elmore, a resident of Headland, passed away Saturday night, February 8, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was 86.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 11, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday at the mortuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303 or Alabama Kidney Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 12505, Birmingham, AL 35202.


            Robert Elmore was born April 19, 1927 in Houston County to Willie Byrd Elmore and Ruby Davis Elmore. He was a 1945 graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.  Upon graduation from high school, Robert enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served two years on the aircraft carrier, Block Island CVE 106 during World War II.


            Upon returning home from the war, Robert farmed and later was employed by Coca Cola Bottling Company for thirty-two years before retiring in 1988. He was an avid Alabama football and New York Yankee baseball fan. Robert enjoyed fishing, and enjoyed playing dominoes with friends on the square in Headland. He enjoyed eating with family and friends at Willy D’s every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Robert was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law, Johnnie and Wilburn Jarvis, Mildred and Felix Whatley, and I. Z. Bowden.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty-five years, Ruth Givens Elmore, Headland; a daughter, Rhonda Elmore Thompson (Gregg), Kinsey; a son, James Rickey Elmore (Debbie), Clayhatchee; a sister, Kitty Bowden, Dothan; five grandchildren, Heath Macko (Denise), Brian Johnson (Amanda), Sara Elmore, Chris Elmore, and Nicole Green (Brian); five great-grandchildren, Holly Macko, Lucas Johnson, Avery Elmore, Xander Elmore, and Wilson Green; a sister-in-law, Gayle Givens McMullin; a brother-in-law, Jimmy Ray Givens (Patty); several nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Gregg Thompson, Frank McClenny, Joe Watson, Paul Peterson, Sherrill Singleton, Tommy Jones, Cooper Mims, and Robert Adkinson. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Headland Domino Club, and former co-workers of Coca Cola Bottling Company.


            The family would like to thank Dawn Cobb, staff and Doctors of Davita Wiregrass Kidney, and Covenant Hospice for the loving care and support of our loved one. He loved and cared for each of you.
