HEADLAND. . .John Fred McKay, a resident of Headland, died early Friday night, November 14, 2014. He was 79.           


            Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 16, 2014, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Reverend Otis Derrah and Reverend Mike Wehner officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Headland and Dothan. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the Worship Center of the church.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Headland “Bridge To Tomorrow” Building Fund, 301 East Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.


            Mr. McKay was a lifelong resident of Henry County, near Headland, son of the late Boony Fred McKay and Bernice Pearce McKay. He was a 1953 graduate of Headland High School. Mr. McKay was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge 529. He was engaged in farming all his adult lifetime.  Mr. McKay was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Ray Asbury.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Jo Ann Kelly McKay, Headland; two daughters, Lydia McKay Arndt (David), Birmingham; and Leigh Ann McKay Hewes (Robert), Dothan; a sister, June McKay Asbury, Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren, Mary McKay Hewes, Mollie Elizabeth Hewes, and Charles William Arndt; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Kelly family, Jean and James Taylor, Johnny and Betty Kelly, Sharon and Jimmy Newsom; an aunt, Bonnie McKay; several nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Buddy Asbury, Preston Shipes, Donald Shipes, John Paul Hayes, Doug Balkcom, Jack Snell, Jim Taylor, John Kelly, and Brian Newsom.
