NEWVILLE. . .John Wildon Roney, a resident of Newville, died early Saturday morning, January 26, 2013, at his home. He was 93.



            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 28, 2013, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Bryan Klobe and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating.  Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 A.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.



            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, Alabama, or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.



            Mr. Roney was a lifelong resident of Newville, son of the late John Webster (Webb) Roney and Trudie Stephens Roney. After graduation from Newville High School in 1940, Mr. Roney enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II. While serving in the military, Mr. Roney served as a B24 bomber pilot and was wounded during combat.  He was awarded the Air Medal, the Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal while serving in the European Theater of Operations and the American Theater of Operations. Mr. Roney received a disability retirement in 1946 with rank of 1st Lieutenant.



            Mr. Roney was employed with the Newville Post Office forty years where he served as Postmaster and rural mail carrier. While serving as an active member and Deacon in the Newville Baptist Church, he was involved in various church activities. Mr. Roney was preceded in death by his first wife, Hilda Golden Roney, three sisters, Evelyn Roney, Margaret Roney and Martha Roney Shelley, and two brothers, Jack Roney and Joe Roney.



            Surviving relatives include his wife, Inez White Taylor Roney; a daughter, Trilbia Roney Ausley and husband, Joe, Dothan; a step-daughter, Dianne Taylor Bradley, a resident of Dothan, formerly of Newville; a sister, Sallie Roney Brannon and husband, Arthur Lee Brannon, Newville; three grandchildren, Garrick Kirkland and wife, Kenna; Kelli Marchman and husband, Jay; and Curt Ausley and wife, Brooke;  four step-grandchildren, David Williams and wife, Krista; Chris DeVaughn; Keith Taylor and wife, Cathy; Holli Adams and husband, John; and several step-great-grandchildren.



            The family would like to express their appreciation to Covenant Hospice and also special caregivers, Annie Reynolds and Delia Rogers for loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Roney during his illness.



            Serving as active pallbearers will be Garrick Kirkland, Curt Ausley, Jay Marchman, Tom Brannon, Phil Shelley, John Walden Roney, and Taylor DeVaughn.
