HEADLAND….Joy Knowles Parker, a resident of County Road 49, Headland, died Saturday morning, April 13, 2013 in a Dothan hospital. She was 83.


            Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 15, 2013, in the Bethlehem Baptist Church with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, 2506 State Highway 134, East, Headland, AL 36345 or to the Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church or Cemetery Fund, c/o Mary Gilley, 2005 County Road 55, Newton, AL 36352.


            Mrs. Parker, daughter of the late Henry Howard Knowles and Maxine Mathison Knowles, was a native of Newville and moved to the Bethlehem Community near Headland in 1950. She was a graduate of Newville High School and attended the University of Montevallo and Auburn University. Mrs. Parker was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church where she formerly taught Sunday school for over fifty years, taught Girls in Action, Woman’s Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School. She was a former member of the Headland Garden Club and Headland Study Club. Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her husband of fifty three years, Billy H. Parker; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Granberry and husband, Glen Granberry and Carol Knowles.


            Surviving relatives include her son, Curry Parker and wife, Mary, Headland; a brother, Charles Knowles, Fulton, MO; four grandchildren, Amy Parker Balkcom and husband, Kris; Lori Parker Beasley and husband, Ashley; Charley Tew and wife, Carla and Wesley Armstrong and wife, Janet; six great-grandchildren, Tanner Folger, Elizabeth Folger, Sela Balkcom, Savannah Armstrong, Gunner Tew and Stacie Jane Armstrong; an aunt, Penny Carroll; brother-in-law, Mike Parker and wife, Carole; several nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Jim Parker, Chris Parker, Chad Granberry, Dustin Granberry, Charley Tew and Jason Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Joy Sunday School Class of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
