David “Dave” O’Hearn, 93, died on April 3, 2015 at the Armed Forces Retirement Center in Gulfport, MS. He lived in Dothan, AL for many years prior to moving into the AFRC after his wife, Marjorie, passed away.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Father Patrick Gallagher officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dave spent 30 years of active service in the U. S. Navy. During his time in the Navy, Dave saw action in the Pacific flying as the engineer in PBYs during World War II and rose to the rank of Lt. Commander. Among the many awards he received were the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct/Gold Star, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. By the time Dave retired his education included Aeronautical Engineering and numerous Navy Aviation Schools.

Dave was an amazing servant to God; a proud serviceman to his country; and a fine man to his family and friends.

Dave gave generously of his time, money, and wisdom. He helped out whenever needed, never hesitating to pitch in. He donated faithfully to the church and various causes that were important to him.

Dave was a very happy man. He was full of life and always had a twinkle in his eyes. He loved to laugh and travel. He enjoyed telling a good joke as well as hearing one. He would be telling us right now “Oh come on now” if he knew we were saddened at his passing.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents David and Gertrude O’Hearn, his two brothers Bob and Clifford, and his sister Rosemary. He is survived by four nephews, Matt, Mike, Dan and Tim; nine nieces, Deborah, Diana, Stephanie, Patricia, Kathy, Connie, Sylvia, Barbra and Karen; and special friends, Betty Smith and Gerald Smith.

Dave was born on Christmas Day in 1921. He died April 3, 2015 – just 2 days before Easter. How ironic that this godly man was born on Jesus’ birthday and passed away at Easter time when Jesus rose from the dead. He will stay alive in our hearts as long as we remember him and what a great way to honor him by using his life as an example for us to follow.

“He left us quietly, his thoughts unknown, but left us a memory we are proud to own. So treasure him Lord in Your garden of rest, for when on earth he was one of the best.”
