Lt. James “Ray” Howell of Slocomb passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 80.



 



Graveside services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Rehobeth Cemetery with Reverend Perry Smith officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.



 



The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 A.M. Thursday, February 26, 2015. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to your favorite charity.



 



Mr. Howell was born October 25, 1934 in Houston County, Alabama. He was a 1953 graduate of Rehobeth High School. Mr. Howell was a veteran with the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Biddle. Upon his retirement with the Navy, Mr. Howell earned his degree in Computer Science while working as an accountant with Meadow Gold in Dothan. He later was employed by Houston County Board of Education where he was the NJROTC instructor at Rehobeth High School.



 



While working at Rehobeth High School, Mr. Howell enjoyed running the school canteen and assisting with transporting the football team managers. After his retirement, he spent his time with school buddy Lee Dobbs and always looked forward to the annual Class of ’53 reunions. He was supportive of his stepdaughter’s horse show competitions and passed the love of horses on to many children.



 



He is preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Vallie Howell and two brothers Joe Howell and Bobby Howell.



 



Mr. Howell is survived by his wife Margaret Doratha Howell of Rehobeth; two daughters, Lorna Jean (Erick) Gilliland of Arkansas; Cheney Lynn (Bill) Hibochman of Maryland; stepdaughter, Dianne Lassister (Steve Morris) of Ashford; two brothers, Ronnie (Cindy) Howell of Jacksonville, FL; Reginald “Red” (Melba) Williams of Rehobeth; a special caregiver, Felix (Wanda) Garth of Rehobeth; and several nieces and nephews.



 



The family will be at the home of Red and Melba Williams at 2153 Johnny Murphy Rd, Rehobeth, AL.
