Mack Ellen Hughes, 84, a resident of Dothan, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2013 at a local hospital.


Funeral services will be held 3 pm Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at Sunset Funeral Home one hour prior to service. At other times the family will be at the home of Bea and Ralph Johnson, 100 Overlook Drive, Dothan, Alabama.


Mrs. Hughes was born May 18, 1929 in Ashford and she lived her earlier years in Columbia. Mrs. Hughes lived most of her life in Dothan. She was employed with Southeast Alabama Medical Center before she became an Elite Avon representative of the Atlanta branch for over 10 years. Mrs. Hughes was a devout Christian and a member of Eastside Free Will Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staffs at The Terrace at Grove Park, Wesley Manor (Martin Wing) and the Critical Care Unit (4th floor) at SAMC for their caring and loving kindness for their mother.


Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Frank Hughes; her parents, Mager and Annie Mae Thompson; her brothers, Gene Thompson, Hayward Thompson and Rex Allen Thompson; her sister, Irell Johnson Ramage; and her son-in-law, John Wayne Chappell.


Survivors include her son Ronald (Sue) Hughes; her daughters, Bea (Ralph) Johnson and Maxine Chappell; her grandchildren, Cheri Chappell Spann, Stanley Chappell, Cindy Chappell Crowley, P.K. Murphy, James Johnson, Dana Hughes Dean, Brooke Hughes Clark, Anna Hughes Hewett; brothers and sisters, Vivian Hicks, Martha Lois McDaniel, Billy Joe Thompson, John Ellis Thompson and Dennis Wayne Thompson; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Scotty Jordan, Terry Hicks, Larry Hicks, Robert Mitchell, Stanley Chappell, Wallace Hughes, James Johnson and Jay Hughes.
