Major (Ret) Melvin L. Gingery, 75, a Daleville resident, passed away, Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at the Bay Center Medical Hospital in Panama City, Florida.

Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania January 22, 1939, Melvin was the son of the late Charles K. and Mabel Victoria Smith Gingery.

Melvin completed Basic Training at Fort Carson, Colorado and Advanced Training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  He later served at Mainz, Germany, Philadelphia, PA (Reserve Unit) Ashland, KY (Army Recruiter) Fort Campbell, KY, Fort Benning, GA, Ft. Melvin loved the outdoors; winter was mountain time for skiing, spring found him fishing, summer sailing his boat, the “Sea Sparrow” (that he built himself) and fall hunting.  There was never enough time for all the things he loved to do, whether it was flying his own plane, sketching, painting, carpentry, or masonry, he was fully committed to living a full life.  He was a good father from diapers to adulthood and a loyal and faithful friend who will be missed dearly.

In addition to his parents, Major Gingery was preceded in death by a son, Timothy C. Gingery, one sister and four brothers.

He is survived by former wife, Sharon Gingery;  Claudette Jackson, mother of his children; three children, Mark L. Gingery, Columbus, GA; Matthew J. Gingery (Terri) Yulee, FL; Laury Gingery, Dothan, AL; five grandchildren, Derek Gingery; Devon Gingery; Rowan Gingery; Cadet Abe Gingery; Adam Gingery; great-granddaughter, Alexis Gingery; sister, Shirley Weinhardt, DeLand, FL; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
