Margaret H. Welden


Margaret H. Welden, 93, a longtime Dothan resident, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Flowers Hospital.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 19, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clark M. Cornelius officiating. A private burial for family only will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 1:45 p.m. on Friday prior to service time.


Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to Grace Anglican Church, 113 Gloster Court, Dothan, AL, 36303.


Mrs. Welden was born May 7, 1921 in Marietta, Georgia to Howard B. and Fredonia Harmon.  She was a graduate of North Fulton High School in Atlanta and a 1941 graduate of Hollins College in Virginia. In 1946, she and her husband, Dr. James Welden, Sr., an orthodontist, moved to Dothan. She continued to make Dothan her home for nearly 70 years.


Mrs. Welden was actively involved in her community. She was a member of the Dothan Service League, the Dothan Garden Club and the Dothan Country Club.  She was associated with both the National Peanut Festival and the Azalea Trail organizations in Dothan and assisted with them for many years. She helped in the establishment of Dothan Botanical Gardens which continues to thrive today. At the age of 70, she received her PhD in Theology from Christ Church International and taught many Bible studies. Mrs. Welden was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for many years and was a charter member of Grace Anglican Church where she was currently a member.


She is predeceased by her parents, a granddaughter, Sara Leize Schwarzauer and a brother, H. B. Harmon, Jr.


 She is survived by four children, Dr. James M. Welden, Jr. (Mary) of Dothan; Leize W. Pearce (Phillip) of Opelika, Lynne W. Schwarzauer (Jerry) of Opelika and William Harmon Tarpley “H.T.” Welden of Dallas Texas; grandchildren, Dr. James M. Welden, III, Orlando, FL, Neal P. Pearce of Atlanta, GA, Nicholas C. Pearce of Atlanta, GA, Geoffrey S. Pearce of Newnan, GA, Jay Schwarzauer of Houston, TX and Kristin Rockett of Birmingham, AL; a nephew, Robert Harmon.
