           Marvin Rosson Barnes, Sr., a resident of the Barnes Community, near Shorterville, died late Sunday morning, August 2, 2015, in a Dothan hospital. He was 90.


            Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 4, 2015, in the Adoniram Baptist Church with Reverend Otis Derrah officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Adoniram Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Tina Barnes, 3475 County Road 71, Shorterville, AL 36373 or to the Adoniram Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Danny Tye, 918 County Road 29, Shorterville, AL 36373.


            Mr. Barnes, son of the late Joshua Franklin Barnes and Mamie Rosson Pearce Barnes, was a native and lifelong resident of the Barnes Community of Henry County. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, having served on the USS The Sullivans as a SM1C and was a plank owner. Mr. Barnes was a member of the American Legion, Bradley-Keller Post in Abbeville. He was engaged in farming most of his adult lifetime and in later years was employed by Farmer’s Milling and Marketing Company in Abbeville. Mr. Barnes served on the Pea River Electric Cooperative Board for forty two years and was board president for thirty nine of those years. He was a member and Deacon of the Adoniram Baptist Church.


            Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Nolan Barnes; four sisters, Daisy Thomas, Mamie Ruth Folsom, Sarah Barnes, and Hortense Barnes; four brothers, Golden Barnes, John Barnes, Gordon Barnes, and Frank Barnes.


            Surviving relatives include a daughter, Marna Barnes Barnett (Dick), Banks, AL; a son, Pete Barnes (Tina), Shorterville; a sister, Ann Thomason (James), Middleburg, FL; three brothers, Charles Barnes, New Port Richey, FL., James Lawrence Barnes (Ann), Shorterville, and Reverend Fred Barnes (Martie), Lenoir, NC; four grandchildren, Samantha Vance (Michael), Krysti Boothe (Jason), Amanda Yelverton (Ben), and Anna Barnes; six great-grandchildren, Paden Knight, Sydney Boothe, Stone Vance, Rafe Vance, Alicia Cassidy, and Allie Yelverton.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Michael Vance, Jason Boothe, Dale Barnes, Ben Yelverton, Tommy Pelham, and Jerry Blount. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Robinson, Jr., Benny Ward, Steve Ward, and Todd Ward.
