NEWVILLE. . .Mary Elizabeth Bowen Adams, a resident of Newville, died Thursday morning, March 17, 2016, at her home, after an extended illness. She was 86.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, March 20, 2016 in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Timothy Davis and Reverend Bryan Klobe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353.
Mrs. Adams was born and reared in Henry County, near Columbia, daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Bowen and Eva Duke Bowen. She moved to Newville in 1948 where she was a member of the Newville Baptist Church. Mrs. Adams retired from the J C Penney Beauty Salon as a hair stylist. In earlier years, she owned and operated Mary’s Beauty Shop in Newville and Headland. She was also formerly employed by Family Hair Care in Headland, and Cut N Curl in Abbeville. Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by five sisters, Louise Alexander, Annie Mae Shelley, Addie Smith, Etta Odom and Belva Douglas, and four brothers, C. W. Bowen, R.J. Bowen, J.B. Bowen and Ernest Bowen.
Surviving relatives include her husband, William Elton Adams, a daughter, Susan Adams Kitts (Roy), and a son, Reverend Don Adams (Barbara), all of Newville; two sisters, Lora Woodham and Clyde Mulkey, both of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Mae Bowen, Newville; six grandchildren, John Adams (Holli), Donna McCoy (Dr. Chris), Thomas Adams (Farrah), Colton Kitts, Cliff Kitts and Carmen Kitts; six great-grandchildren, Anna Adams, Abigail Adams, Cason McCoy, Cailin McCoy, Elizabeth Adams and Emery Adams; numerous nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Marissa Jane Bowen.
The family would also like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Gentiva Home Health and also to special caregivers, Karen Bostick and Catherine Patterson, for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Adams during her illness.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Colton Kitts, Roy Kitts, Dr. Chris McCoy, John Adams, Thomas Adams, Chris Bowen and Brennen Bowen.
