ABBEVILLE. . .Mary Lou Gay Carter, a resident of the Screamer Community of Henry County, died Monday night, September 2, 2013, at her home. She was 73.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in the Liberty United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Doss and Dr. Al Harbour officiating. Graveside services will follow in the church cemetery with Reverend Dianne Kelly officiating. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 A.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mary Lou Carter was reared in Georgetown, Georgia and Abbeville.  She lived in the Screamer Community since her marriage to Johnny Frank Carter and died on their 58th wedding anniversary. Mary Lou was member of the Liberty United Methodist Church. She was retired from American Buildings Company in Eufaula in accounts receivables. In earlier years, Mary Lou was employed by Jones Reynolds Lumber Company and WestPoint Stevens. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Lee Gay, her mother, Maude Hollingsworth Madrid, and a brother, Henry Gay.


            Surviving relatives include her husband, Johnny Frank Carter, a daughter, Andrea  Carter Bowden, a son, Keith Carter (Susan), a brother, Dan Madrid, and a sister-in-law, Maggie H. Carter, all of Abbeville; five grandchildren, Brittany Baxley (Timothy), Katelyn Kennedy, Kevin Carter, Chris Waggoner (Jennifer), and Patty Gamber (Keith); eight great-grandchildren, including a special great-granddaughter, Aubrey Ellis, and one on the way; nieces and nephews, Walter Gay, Terrell Gay, Danielle Madrid Rollins, Kristie Allums, Mickie Mobley, Darlene Moore, Melissa Johnson, and Sheila Herring; several great-nieces and great-nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Fred Tye, Chris Waggoner, Ted Bowden, Mark Kennedy, Walter Gay, Jeff Goodson, Adam Richardson, and Scotty Sanders.
