Mavis Johnson Byrd


Mavis Johnson Byrd, 95, of Dothan, died Thursday, September 26, 2013 at her home.


Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hugh D. Kirkland officiating. A private family graveside burial will follow in Ozark City Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Sunday.


Flowers will be accepted or anyone wishing to make donations may mail the memorials to their charitable organization of choice.


Mrs. Byrd was born at home on August 10, 1918, in Springhill, to the late Jesse and Elma Whitehead Johnson.  She married Lloyd Branscomb Byrd I on Dec. 7, 1941, and was a career Air Force wife for 27 years, living in nine states and the Panama Canal Zone.  She was an avid gardener, reader, fisherwoman, volunteer and bridge player. Her major career was that of mother to her three children, grandmother to seven, and great-grandmother to seven. Mrs. Byrd had a deep love for her Lord, Jesus Christ, and has gone home to be with Him. The family wishes to thank Alacare for the compassionate ministrations to her in her final weeks of life. 


Mrs. Byrd was preceded in death by her husband in 1969 and by her grandson, Spence Stephens, Jr., in 2012.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law,  Lloyd and Ramona Byrd, Dothan; two daughters and one son-in-law, Tanya and Spence Stephens, Sugar Land, TX, and Yveta Phillips, Belton, TX; one brother, Marvin Johnson, of Rutledge; seven grandchildren: Bran Byrd, Ashley Byrd Schaule, Caitlin Byrd, Jessi Byrd, Dothan; Damon Phillips, Belton, TX; and MAJ Mark Stephens, on assignment with the Army in PA; seven great-grandchildren: Logan Byrd, Addyson Grace Schaule, AnaLea and Aiden Byrd, Dothan; Madison and Phoenix Phillips, Belton, TX; and Riley Stephens, Poland, OH.
