Michael Hudson Atwell


Michael Hudson Atwell, age 53, of Dothan, Alabama passed away Tuesday morning, November 17, 2015 in his home after a yearlong fight against Pancreatic Cancer.


Michael was born July 13, 1962 in Gainesville, Florida. He was the youngest of four children. Michael grew up loving sports of all types. He won multiple sports awards in high school for his athleticism and boating skills. Michael graduated from Blacksburg High School in Blacksburg Virginia. He attended Emory and Henry College in Abington, Virginia. After attending college, he moved to Dothan, Alabama to work in his family’s automobile business in sales and management for over 17 years. Michael began working with Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center in 1999. At the time of his death, Michael was the Chief Operating Officer at Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center where for the past sixteen years he helped to provide training and job placement for individuals with disabilities. He continued to work with WRC from home whenever able until his death. When not working, Michael loved to spend time on his farm in Haleburg. Many a Saturday would find him out on his land, riding the tractor or planting food plots for hunting season. He was an avid hunter and loved spending time with friends and family out in the woods hunting or fishing at his pond.


Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Emily Marlene Smith Atwell; his father, Charles Alan Atwell; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.


He is survived by his wife, Angela Sasser Atwell; his son, Michael “Hudson” Atwell, II; his in-laws, Dr. and Mrs. Jack L. Sasser; his brother, Charles A. Atwell, Jr. (Janet); his sisters, Donna A. Dye (Mark) and Dianne Atwell Vernon (Art); sister-in-law, Shari Sasser Rawls (Mike); and several nieces and nephews, Gavin and Raegan Rawls, Kimberly, Joshua and Sarah Atwell, Blake and Chelsea Dye and Zachary, Grace and Sidney Vernon.


A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2015 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Cox of Bay Springs Baptist Church officiating and Steven Scott, of Memphis, Tennessee, formerly of Dothan, giving the eulogy. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday morning from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to service time.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wiregrass Rehab Center – Donations, 795 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36303, or Alacare Hospice, 3379 W Main St, Dothan, AL 36305 .


Honorary pallbearers are nephews, Joshua Atwell, Gavin Rawls, Blake Dye, Zachary Vernon; cousins, Jim Smith and Thomas Smith; and friends, David Badham, Josh Harville, Chad Barrentine, Hank Vaughn, Austin Spann and Johnny Manning.
