Mr. Charles A. Stough of Geneva passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2015 after an extended illness. He was 86. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Geneva with Rev. James F. Purnell of Birmingham, Ala. and Dr. Ed Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service on Sunday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Gym Building Fund, PO Box 579, Geneva, AL 36340.


Coach Stough was born in Tallassee, Ala. on November 8, 1928, to the late J.B. and Hixie Lena Stough. After playing football on the Tallassee High School fifty-seven-game winning streak under Coach Hot O’Brian, he was a four-year starter for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.


His first coaching job was at Red Level High School, where he led his team to the Alabama State Championship and was named the Coach of the Year. In 1960, he married and moved to Demopolis where he was head football coach at Demopolis High School, head coach at Thompson High School in Siluria, Ala. and later at Samson High School. He then went on to become an assistant football coach at Geneva High School and taught driver’s education until his retirement in 2000. Coach Stough was a longtime member of the Geneva First Baptist Church. An infant daughter, Susan Stough; two brothers, Garlton Stough and James Stough; and a sister, Myrtis Pemberton, preceded him in death.


He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Wilda Purnell Stough; son, Jay Stough (Beth); two grandchildren, Jay Scott Stough, II and Jaylee Elizabeth Stough, all of Geneva; brother, Louie Stough (Martha) of Wetumpka, Ala; and several nieces and nephews.
