 Obituary: Mr. David Randall Avery 


 


Mr. David Randall Avery of Slocomb passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at his residence. He was 91. 


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 31 at First Baptist Church of Slocomb with Rev. Dan Raley officiating. Burial will follow in Slocomb City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing. 


The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time. 


In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Slocomb, P.O. Box 428, Slocomb, AL 36375. 


Mr. Avery was born March 26, 1922 in Geneva County to the late William Henry and Eula Thwreat Avery. Mr. Avery was the longest serving active member of the First Baptist Church of Slocomb. He owned and operated Avery Milling Company for over 50 years. A faithful public servant, Mr. Avery served on the Slocomb City Council for 16 years and proudly represented the citizens of Slocomb as Mayor for 2 years. In addition, he was chairman of the Slocomb Water Board for several years. A proud veteran, Mr. Avery served in the United States Army during World War II. 


In addition to his parents three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. 


Survivors include his loving wife of 71 years, Jeanette Avery, Slocomb; two sons: David Avery (Ruthie) and Wayne Avery (Beth), both of Slocomb; four grandchildren: Tony Avery (Kelly), Tuscaloosa, Ashley Avery (Mandy), Enterprise, Wendy Morgan (Bill), Hayneville and Jamey Avery (Teisha), Dothan; nine great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
