 Mr. Emmitt Benton, age 82, a resident of Dothan, passed away early Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.


Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Memphis Baptist Church with Reverend Rick Glenn and Reverend Jim Tate officiating and burial will follow in the church cemetery with Kendall Glover directing.


The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memphis Baptist Church Children’s Department, 4595 Eddins Rd, Dothan, AL 36301.


Mr. Benton was born in Houston County, AL on April 24, 1934 the son of the late Frances Marion and Ida Grimsley Benton. He is a graduate of Cottonwood High School class of 1954. Emmitt served in the US Navy during the Koran War.  He retired from Georgia Pacific after of 22 years of service and prior to this he worked for a number of years for Colonial Baking Company as route salesman. Mr. Benton loved his hobbies which were woodworking and fishing. Emmitt is a member and former deacon of Memphis Baptist Church where he also worked in the pre-school and children’s department and was known by the children as the Candy Man.


Survivors include: his wife, Gwen Granberry Benton, Dothan; 2 sons, Michael Emmitt Benton, Gordon, AL, Mitchell Scott Benton, Florence, AL; 2 grandchildren, Jeremey ( Allison) Benton, and Mallory Benton; 2 great-grandchildren, Audrey Grace Benton, and Ansley Gwen Benton; several nieces and nephews.


Honorary Pallbearers will be The Co-ed 7 Class of Memphis Baptist Church.


Glover Funeral Home of Dothan has been entrusted with the arrangements.
