Mr. Harry Luther Chancy of Geneva passed away Tuesday, June 04, 2013.  He was 91.  Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church with Minister Harry O. Adkison and Rev. Jay Ward officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, June 6, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made either to the Geneva Volunteer Fire Department or to the Geneva Rescue Squad, at PO Box 37, Geneva, AL 36340.


 


Mr. Chancy was born in Hartford, AL on August 25, 1921 to the late H.F. “Judge” Chancy and Eva Melissa Mosely Chancy.  He served in the US Navy during WWII.  Upon returning from the war he began employment with Alabama Power Co. where he retired after 38 years, serving the last twenty-one years as local manager in the Geneva office. 


 


Being very active in his community, Mr. Chancy was one of the founding members of the Geneva Rescue Squad.  He also served eighteen years with the Geneva Fire Department, the last fourteen years as Geneva’s Fire Chief.  He was a past member of the Geneva Lions Club and a past president and member of the Geneva Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow.  He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for sixty years.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Russ Phelps Chancy; son-in-law, Keith Greene; and all four of his siblings.  He was the last of his generation.


 


He is survived by three daughters, Beverly Powell (Roy) of Geneva, Carol Smith (Tim) of Graceville, FL and Vicky Greene of Newport News, VA; grandchildren, Brant Powell of Auburntown, TN, Chance Powell (Erika), Bayn Powell (Leah) all of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Seth Smith (Kristy) of Gainsville, FL, Meghan Miller (Patrick) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Jonothan Greene (Janelle) of Ft. Bragg, NC; Nicholas Greene of Richmond, VA; great grandchildren, Ben, Sloane, Whitney and Reese Powell, Emmie Smith and Smith Miller; and special sister-in-law, Billie Phelps Dorriety of Ozark.
