Mr. Homer Dodwell Meeks, Jr. (Rip), age 84, of Dothan passed away Monday, March 28, 2016.


 


Born December 31, 1931 in Compass Lake, FL to the late Homer D. Meeks, Sr. and Ethel L Cutchen Meeks, Rip served his country in the United States Air Force. He earned degrees from Troy State University, Auburn University, University of South Carolina, and University of Alabama. Rip taught in Jackson County, FL and Houston County schools for over 30 years as a High School math and science teacher. He also served as High School band director and was a Scout Master for 25 years with Boy Scouts of America. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rip served as Branch President of the Dothan branch of the church in addition to serving as the ward pianist, organist, Family History Director, as well as many other callings.


 


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Martin Meeks; his sister, Susan Frances Meeks Worrell; his nephew, Alex Stetz; and his niece Debbie Meeks.


 


Survivors include his loving wife, Virginia Sewell Meeks; nieces and nephews, Rusty (Deborah) Worrell, Patty (Bernie) Stetz, Laura Penn, Timmy Lassiter, Ryan Lassiter, Jennelle Barton, Susan Curtis, Sarah Jackson, Becky Meeks, Mark Meeks, and James Meeks; several great-nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Madeleine Meeks and Barbara Murphy; and brother and sister-in law, Thomas and Alice Sewell.


 


Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Rodney Cain officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 PM to 7 PM, Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home.


 


The family will be accepting flowers.
