John Franklin Arnold, Sr., 83, of Dothan, Alabama died Sunday, November 6, 2016.


Memorial services for Mr. Arnold will be held at 10 AM Thursday, November 10, 2016 in Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage with Reverend Stacy Stafford officiating. The family will receive friends from 9 AM until 9:45 AM prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will follow with military honors at Ft. Mitchell National cemetery at 1:30 PM EST time.


Mr. Arnold was born on August 28, 1933 in Butler, Choctaw County, Alabama, and was the son of Jesse Arnold and O’Keith Jeffries Arnold. His family moved to Dothan in 1938. He graduated from Dothan High School in 1951and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in November 1951. He received Honorable Discharge in November 1954, having attained the rank of Sargent. On September 3, 1955, Mr. Arnold married Dorothy Ondine Bentley at the First Baptist Church in Dothan.


On January 3, 1996, he retired from Civil Service at the Civilian Personnel Office in Fort Rucker, Alabama with 24 years of Federal Service. During this time he had served as a Personnel Management Specialist, a Position Classification Specialist, Chief of Nonappropriated Fund Personnel Office and Labor Relations Specialist. During his employment at Fort Rucker, Mr. Arnold received numerous performance and achievement awards including in 1965, the Civilian Employee of the Year Award for Fort Rucker, Alabama. Upon retirement, he was presented with the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award.


During Mr. Arnold’s working years, he was a member of a number of organizations including the Fort Rucker Civilian Personnel Council, the Gulf Coast Personnel Council, The Third US Army Personnel Council, the Enterprise Toastmasters Club, the Gideon’s, the Marine Corps League, and the American Legion.


Mr. Arnold was an active member of Southside Baptist Church in Dothan since March of 1956. He was very active in service to the Lord at Southside, having served on numerous committees, teaching young people for more than 20+ years, and was ordained as a deacon at Soutside in 1966.


Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Tommy Arnold.


Mr. Arnold was thankful for God’s grace and love in providing him with a loving wife of 61 years, and a caring family, which he loved devotedly. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Sheila Arnold Keedy (Pat) of Gardendale, Alabama; one son, John F. Arnold, Jr. (Debbie) of Pensacola, Florida; one brother, James K. Arnold, Sr. of Destin, Florida; sister in laws, Sandy Bentley Klemond (Tom) of Ft. Walton Beach, Flordia, Jewel Bentley of Savannah, Georgia; brother in law Wayne Bentley (Lynn) of Jack, Alabama; five precious and loving grandchildren, Ryan Keedy (Samantha), Mackenzie Keedy, Mary Coley (Steve), Caroline Arnold, and John W. Arnold; four great grandchildren, Dax Keedy, Peyton Keedy, Ava Coley, and Charlie Coley. He is also survived by a number of loving relatives and a special nephew, Keith Arnold.


The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alabama Children’s Home.
