John Goodwin Oliver of Dothan died July 27, 2015. He was 99 years old.


 


Graveside services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


 


He was born in Laredo, Texas January 19, 1916. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Texas in 1937. He worked on the Texas Law Review from 1938 to 1939. He then earned a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Texas in 1940. He was a longtime member of the Texas Bar Association.


 


He was in the Army during World War II, and joined the United States Foreign Service, serving from 1941 to 1975. The US Diplomatic Corps assigned him to posts in Mexico and London. He was Consul General in Curacao in 1969 and Counselor for Economic Affairs, US Embassy, in Madrid in 1974. He specialized in economics and petroleum matters for the US Department of State.


 


He was a faithful Longhorn and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Most recently he was a member of the Hackers, a golf team at the Dothan Country Club.


 


He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dothan.


 


He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Dahlgren Oliver, who died in June, 1998.
