John Liles Guy, 90, resident of Fredonia Place (and previously Hartford, Alabama) died Wednesday morning (July 9, 2014) at his home.  He passed from this world and is now present with his Savior in heaven.

He was born on August 16, 1923 in Black, Alabama, the son of the late Daniel and Emma (Spikes) Guy.

John graduated from Luverne (AL) High School as class president and youngest member of his class in 1939.  He was a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the United States Navy during WWII, serving as an LCT skipper in the Pacific theatre.  He then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in music and Bible at Bob Jones College.  After the war he married Jeanne Vunderink, and together they traveled the country providing music for the evangelistic services of Jesse Hendley and E.J. Daniels.  John worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Cleveland, Ohio from 1948 until his retirement in 1978.

Upon retirement he returned to his native southern Alabama, and served as Music Director at Hartford United Methodist Church.  He spent several summers as a member of the support staff at Interlochen National  Music Camp.  John and Jeanne performed together for more than six decades, delighting audiences in churches, music clubs, banquets, and reunions.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his two brothers, Warren Howard and Ray Walker Guy.  He is survived by Jeanne, the love of his life and wife of 67 years; two children, Robin Guy (wife of Todd Seelye, Cedar Falls, IA) and Marc Guy (husband of Linda, Dunkirk, NY), and grandsons Peter and Daniel Guy, also of Dunkirk.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.  Memorial gifts may be sent to Hartford United Methodist Church, 205 S. 3rd Ave, Hartford, AL 36344
