Joseph Ross Hornsby was born April 1, 1919 to Ben and Pearl Jones Hornsby in Dothan, AL.  He graduated from Dothan High School and attended Auburn University where he was a member of ROTC.  In his junior year, he was drafted, joined the Army Air Corp, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.  He became a WWII pilot of the B-24 Liberator.  He flew out of Cheddington Air Base in England and flew over 30 combat missions over Germany.  He received three Bronze Stars and the Europe/Africa/Middle East Ribbon for his service.

After the war, he returned to Dothan and worked for 10 years as part owner of a service station.  He then worked in sales and advertising, and worked for many years for W.P. Shealy Advertising before reluctantly retiring in his early 90’s.

He was known for his outgoing personality, strong work ethic and for having a special love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his son Jimmy Hornsby, daughter Joellen Williford, three grandchildren, Harrow Strickland, Alison Pepito, and Robyn Nudson, and four great grandchildren, Alexander Strickland, Benjamin Strickland, Maxwell Pepito and Dylan Nudson, and two sisters Betty King and Helen Wells.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Hughes Hornsby, son Mills Hornsby and two sisters, Lyndall Smith and Benelle Stokes.

There will be a graveside service on Monday, November 24, at 11am at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Slocomb, AL.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Donations may be made to any Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or First Baptist Church in Dothan.
