Ronald Newton Whitehurst, 70, a resident of Ashford passed away July 20, 2015 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center after an extended illness.  A celebration of Ronald’s life will be held at 10 AM Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Wayside Baptist Church of Ashford with Reverend Adam Habbard officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 PM until 8 PM Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home.


Ronald was born January 14, 1945 in Cowarts, Alabama to the late J. C. and Jewel Newton Whitehurst.  He was a retired engineer for Seaboard Systems Railroad and proudly served his country as a member of the Alabama Army National Guard for over 22 years.  He was a lifelong member and deacon at Wayside Baptist Church and he and his wife Theresa were the first couple married in Wayside.  They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage October 8, 2015. 


Preceding him in death were his parents, J. C. and Jewel Whitehurst; two sisters, Robbie Whitehurst Still and Carla Whitehurst Skeen; one brother, Jimmy Whitehurst.  Surviving relatives include his wife, Theresa Smith Whitehurst; a brother-in-law, David Palmer; 2 sons, Ashley (Michelle) Whitehurst and Jason (Kelli) Whitehurst; eight grandchildren, Trevor and Seth Whitehurst, Josh (Whitney) Lashley, Abby Johns, Reed and Madison Whitehurst, Drew and Whit Woods; one sister, Frances (JT) Radney; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. 


Pallbearers will be Wesley Myers, Harry Eubanks, Tommy Fondren, Joe Thompson, Ronnie Shelley, and Ken Brown.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ashford Masonic Lodge #493, the Ashford Domino Club and Larry Allen, Glen Griffin, Milton Wimberly, Chris Cahalan, and the 1963 Class of Ashford High School.


The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to:  Dr. Gwinn, Dr. Adkison, Dr. Kennedy, Dr. Stone, Dr. Latimer, Dr. Bhise and the staff members of the Palliative Care Unit at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
