Mrs. Carr was born on October 29, 1917, in Geneva County.  She was the seventh of twelve children born to William Thomas Newman and Vinnie L.  Hildreth Newman.  She was graduated from Geneva High School in 1935.  After she married her husband, Henry Jayette Carr, they moved to Samson, AL.  She was a homemaker until time for her children to go college.  She worked at Wex-Tex factory for many years.  She and her husband then bought the Samson Variety Store and later bought the store in Opp.  After the death of her husband in 1974, she continued the operation of both stores until they were sold.  She then worked as a member of the Board of Registrars for Geneva County for 12 years and retired at the age of 81.  She was a great seamstress and when she was in her sixties, after taking lessons from Sarah Stone, she became an artist.  Mrs. Carr served on many committees at her church and for over 50 years she enjoyed singing in the choir.  She served as the chairperson for the needlepoint cushions project for the church altar and communion rail. For many years she was a member of The Samson Garden Club and she often won 1st place for her flower arrangements. Mrs. Carr was a hard-working woman who loved her church, her family, and her many friends.

Mrs. Carr is survived by her three children:  Carol Ann Carr Jones (Forrest) of Dothan, AL, William H. Carr (Deborah) of Enterprise, AL, and Jerry Newman Carr (Becky) of Cornelius, NC.  Her grandchildren are:  Jeff Jones (Georgie), Jennifer Watson (Terry), Shannon Chancey (Jon Robert), Candace Easdale (Jack), Lauren Lewey (Jim), Kim Sailors (Mark), and Bronwyne Chapman (John). She has 15 great grandchildren.  She is also survived by three sisters-in-law from her husband’s family.  They are Sara Carr Maxwell, Ruth Carr, and Doris Carr.

Mrs. Carr was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and all her siblings.  Four siblings died in their infancy.  The other seven are William Alton Newman (Thelma), Mildred Newman Crutchfield (Pascal), Julia Newman Spike (Alvin), James Robert Newman (Louise), James Wilson Newman (Addieleen), Willie Jean Newman Armantrout (James), and Christene Newman Smith (Russell).  Preceding her in death from her husband’s family are Helen Carr Sellers (Martin), Herman Carr, and Herbert Carr (Lorene).

The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice, Gentiva Home Health Care and all doctors and nurses for their excellent care.  We also are grateful for the excellent caregivers who helped make our mother very happy and comfortable during the last years of her life.  They are Mary Sansom, Cecelia Carroll, Lynn Rushing, Charlotte McCollough, Kylena Pinkerton, Sally Smith, Darla Davis, Shannon Rushing, Miyah Cade, Sherel Crews, Alicia Woodham, Jamie Hamilton, LaVoice MacDonald, and Paula Nelson.  You have been a true blessing to us.
