Mrs. Jonnie Knudson Brooks of Slocomb passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at her home.  She was 89.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 15, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Raley officiating.  Burial will follow in Slocomb City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Slocomb Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 608, Slocomb, AL  36375 or to Slocomb First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Slocomb, AL  36375.  

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. 

Mrs. Jonnie was born on August 9, 1923 in Geneva County, AL to the late Willie Howard and Willie Mae Hicks Morgan. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Slocomb.  A selfless public servant, Mrs. Jonnie dedicated herself to all the citizens of Slocomb, especially to the cities seniors.  She drove many of them to and from the Senior Citizens Center as well as to their doctors’ appointments.  She was chosen Slocomb’s “Women Of The Year” in 1972. Instrumental in the formation of the city’s first rescue squad, Mrs. Jonnie served as a dispatcher and as a paramedic for over 13 years. She was also dedicated to the children of Slocomb, serving as a crossing guard for the elementary school. “In a small, mostly rural, community you have to be mindful of ways to help your fellow citizens, especially those who have been around the block a few times” Mrs. Jonnie was quoted as saying. 

Mrs. Jonnie was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Dale E. Knudson; second husband, William C. Brooks; brother, Hilton Clark; and a sister, Jean Williams.

Survivors include one son:  Jeffrey Knudson of St. George, Utah; an aunt:  Donnette Peacock of Slocomb; one niece:  Cindy Creamer of Chipley, FL; several other relatives and close friends.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Gaye Smith, Joyce Carroll and Margie Smith for the love and care given to Mrs. Jonnie during her illness.  The family would also like to express their gratitude to Gail Monk and Glenda Coleman and the entire staff of Gentiva Hospice for their superb devotion shown to Mrs. Jonnie and the entire family.
