Laura Anne Harrelson Coleman Whiddon, age 79, of Dothan, passed away early Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Wesley Manor Nursing Home under the care of Gentiva Hospice.


 


Born October 30, 1935 in the Rose Hill Community in Covington County, Alabama to the late William Claude Harrelson and Luna Miree Hammett Harrelson-Moore, she graduated high school at Robert E. Lee High School in Ashville, North Carolina. She then attended Auburn University where she met her late husband Floyd D. Coleman, Sr, married and moved to Dothan. She commuted to and graduated from Troy State University in June 1967 with Degree in Education. She also completed the Masters and AA Masters of Education degrees. She was a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society.


 


Anne taught first and fourth grade students at Rehobeth Elementary School (Houston County, Alabama) for 31 years (1967 – 1998). She loved her students as her own and was especially proud when she was able to teach her prior student’s children.


 


She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan and the Temple of Emmanuel. She enjoyed bingo, sewing, crochet, and square dancing with the Goober Gambleers. In addition, she loved travelling with friends and the Seniors at First Baptist Church. Her travels took her places like Spain, Hawaii, Egypt, Israel, England, Alaska, Jamaica, Mexico, and all over the United States.


 


She is also preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, John Espy Whiddon of Midland City.


 


Survivors include her sons, Floyd D. Coleman, Jr. and Jeffery (Maria) Coleman; her daughter, Rebecca (John) Solomon; her grandchildren, Jennifer E. (Jude) Smith, Stapleton, AL, Airman First Class Johnny Mack Harper, Clovis, NM, Marine Sergeant Alejandro (Rae) Coleman, Okinawa, Japan, and Marina (David) McCue, Tallahasse, FL; her sister, Jean (Keith) Jenkins, Denver, NC; John’s children: Johnnie Belinda Whiddon, Tampa, FL, Zelda (Don) Marlowe, Dothan, AL; and granddaughter, Kimberly Marlowe, Tampa, FL.


 


Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, November 14, 2014 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Brother Clayton Jordan and Rabbi Lynn Goldsmith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home.


 


The family will be accepting flowers.
