Leila Mae Barrow Bates, 85, widow of Raymond A. Bates, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2014 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.


 


Memorial graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama.


 


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samford University Bates/Norris Scholarship Fund, 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham, Alabama  35229.


 


Born in Lucille, Alabama, Leila was a daughter of the late John Bryant and Leila Mae Gray Barrow.  A graduate of West Blocton High School and was a member of Ensley Baptist Church in Ensley, Alabama prior to moving to Panama City Beach, Florida where she and her husband owned and operated motels at the county fishing pier and was a member of West Bay Baptist Church. She has resided in Dothan, Alabama for the past eight years and is a member of Bethel Baptist Church on Cottonwood Road, Dothan, Alabama.


 


In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by a grandson, Richard Bert Bates.


 


Surviving are three sons, Allen Bates II, Cottonwood, Alabama, Wayne (Linda) Bates, Dothan, Alabama and Randy Byron (Rose) Bates, West Blocton, Alabama; a daughter, Cheryl Bates (Elliot) Christian, Dothan, Alabama; grandchildren, Raymond Bates III, Ryan Bates, Christopher Bates, Jennifer Christian, Michelle Irwin, Nicole Bates, Kevin Bates, Charlie Bates and Destin Bates; seven great-grandchildren.
