Nellie Elizabeth “Betty” McCord Smith, passed over The River to be with the Lord at Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville, AL on March 7, 2017, two days before her 93rd birthday.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva Madison McCord and Alice Henrietta Kendrick; sister, Catherine; brothers, Edsel and Leon; husband, Ed Smith, Jr.; and daughter, Sharon.

She is survived by a sister, Evelyn; daughter, Cathy, son, Gary; granddaughter, Jeanna; grandsons, Billy, Ben and Dennis; great granddaughter, MacKenzie; and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was born in Webb, AL. The family had very little when she was a child. Her father was a share cropper in South Alabama. The oldest of five children, she was raised by her mother after her father died when she was 9 years old. Being the oldest meant helping raise her brothers and sisters and working in the fields on the farm. She worked at the high school in Andalusia, AL as a source of income for her mother, graduating from high school there before going to work with her sisters Catherine and Evelyn at the box factory in Andalusia. Elizabeth was married to Ed Smith, Jr. on February 3, 1950 in Andalusia, AL. As an Air Force wife she was a homemaker while her children were growing up. After the children were grown and her husband retired, she went to work at Stromburg-Carlson Manufacturing, Lake Mary, FL in electronic circuit board assembly for the production of telephone switching equipment, retiring after 21 years at the plant. She was the sweetest and kindest soul one could ever have the pleasure of meeting. A dedicated wife and loving mother, she wouldn’t spend a dime on herself, instead ensuring that her children were cared for her whole life; and couldn’t find fault in anyone.

Elizabeth will be laid to rest with her husband for eternity at Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan, AL. Ward Wilson Funeral Home of Dothan is handling the private family service and funeral on Saturday, March 25, 2017.
