Mrs. Othell Stewart, age 97, of Ashford passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2016.


    


Born November 25, 1918 in rural Henry County, Alabama to the late Charley and Cora Dukes Thorne, her father died before she was born while in training for WWI. Her mother then married Joseph William Thorne. She was the oldest of 12 children and attended school in Columbia, AL until her marriage to James Rufus Stewart in December 1934. Othell and Rufus moved quite often through the years living in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, and Illinois before settling in Ashford in 1984. Rufus passed away in June 1985. Othell was quite active in her church through the years. She first attended First Baptist Church of Ashford but in more recent years has attended Wayside Baptist Church in Ashford.


 



In addition to her parents and her husband, James Rufus, Othell was preceded in death by her son, Walter Hubert.



                                                      



Survivors include her sons, Rufus Herbert, and James Harell; her brothers, William Thorne (Lela) and Billy Joe Thorne (Linda); her sisters, Catherine Chandler, Joanne Merritt, and Linda Taylor; three grandsons, Daniel, Daryl, and Jimmy; four granddaughters, Lisa, Denise, Judy, and Beth; six great-grandsons, Paul, Robert, Paul, C. J., Blake, and Collin; six great-granddaughters, Jennifer, Nicole, Caitlyn, Meagan, Danielle, and Emma; two great-great-granddaughters, Caitlyn and Valerie; one great-great-grandson, Tristen; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


 


Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Wayside Baptist Church in Ashford with Reverend Adam Habbard officiating. Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


 


The family will receive friends from 12 PM until 1 PM, Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Wayside Baptist Church, prior to the service.


 


The family will be accepting flowers.
