Rita Francis Green Kornegay, a resident of Cowarts, died Monday, September, 15, 2014 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She was 71.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kornegay will be held at 2 PM Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Ashford Assembly of God Church with Reverends James Moody and Henry Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at Noon prior to the services. Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery.

Rita Kornegay, an extraordinary woman who was driven by the desire to help others. A biological mother of two but an adopted mother to thousands. She was a mother to the helpless and hopeless, and made no distinction of person. To our Mother no soul was unredeemable and no person was to be discarded. A Godly role model to many, a woman who never thought of herself, but was always thinking of others. She spent her life at the side of her one great love, Rex Kornegay. For 53 years the two of them would be inseparable and minister to thousands, spreading not only the gospel but the love of Christ. They would become directly responsible for bringing people to salvation. Her last days were spent doing what she loved, caring for others. She left a legacy of Christ’s enduring love to all she touched, a deeply affective woman, a true angel. On September 15th Rita received her Crown, but knowing our Mother, she has probably given it to someone else. And if she could speak, she would challenge us all to do the same.

Survivors include her husband, Rex Kornegay, Cowarts; daughters and sons in law, Tasha and Keith Hooper, Dothan, Ranada and Stacey Cook, Raymond, MS  ; grandchildren Brenna Odom (Heath), Jarrod Skinner (Katie), Savannah Godbold and Swayze Cook; great grandchildren, Luke and Isaac Odom; sisters, Darlene Harden (Milton), Glenda Burleson (Billy), Shirley Grant (Joel); brothers, Wendell Green (Evelyn), Bobby Green and Mike Kilpatrick.
