Mrs. Velma Black Fleming of Geneva, AL passed away in the afternoon of November 14, 2012. Visitation will take place from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Geneva Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dee Koza officiating and Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.


Mrs. Fleming was a member of Geneva Presbyterian Church for many years. Velma Black was born in Black, Alabama on September, 17, 1929. Her mother was Velma Alexander Black and her father, Pony Curtis Black, was the Probate Judge of Geneva County for many years and was a widely known and respected man. Velma was a distant cousin of the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. Velma graduated from Geneva High School, and attended Judson College in Marion, Alabama, where she met and married Lieutenant Bruce Beveridge of Bay Minette, Alabama. Lieutenant Beveridge was killed in action in Korea. He and Velma had a beautiful daughter Brucie, Brucie Beveridge Mancuso of Birmingham, Alabama. Velma re-married to Cecil Johnson, Jr. of Geneva, Alabama, and had two wonderful sons; Cecil Johnson III of Dothan, Alabama and John Mark Johnson of Geneva, AL who preceded his mother in death in 1984.


Velma deeply loved her grandchildren: Mark Johnson of Geneva; Hannah Johnson Lyons of Washington, D.C. and Spenser Johnson of Auburn, AL ; Stephen, Maggie, Addie, and Brucie Mancuso of Birmingham; she also had two great grandchildren, John Parker and Ellie Lane Johnson.


Velma lived a wonderful life in Geneva, Alabama, with many, many friends throughout Southeastern Alabama. She was one of nine children. Her brothers and sisters were: George and Paul Black, Bernice Sartwell, Elise King, Marjorie Wallace, Winnifred Carothers, Mary and Jetta Black.


The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care provided to their mother and grandmother by Jan Dixon and her staff at Greenwood Place.
