Virginia Kirkland Turner


During the morning of January 5, 2016, Virginia Kirkland Turner passed away from natural causes, surrounded by family.


Virginia was born on February 11, 1936, in Slocomb, Geneva County, Alabama.  She was the youngest of seven children, and spent her childhood in Slocomb, graduating from Slocomb High School in 1954.


Following graduation, Virginia met her beloved husband, Paul F. Turner, Sr., at the sweet shop in Slocomb, having been introduced by Paul’s best friend in 1957, and they were married in 1959.  Paul and Virginia moved to Dothan, Alabama, and made their lives there, with Virginia working with Flowers Hospital and affiliated medical practices until her retirement.   Paul and Virginia remained married until his passing in April of 2016.


Virginia enjoyed deer hunting and fishing during her life, and antiquing in the Northeast during her later years.


Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents, Eulas B. Kirkland and Sally Dean Kirkland, her son, Michael Paul Turner, her brothers, Herman Kirkland, Doyce Kirkland, and Clyde Kirkland, and her sisters, Grace Clemmons and Sybil Holster. 


Virginia is survived by her daughter, Patti Horton (Mark), of Nashville, Tennessee, her daughter, Amy Fitch (Lee), of Gordon, Alabama, her son, Paul F. Turner, Jr. (Shea), of Dothan, Alabama, and her sister Mary Hilton of Dothan, Alabama.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, Connor Horton, Kendall Horton, Zane Fitch, John Paul Turner, and Brady Turner, all of who loved and will miss “Mama Girl”.  



Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, January 7, 2017 from Memory Hill Cemetery with Reverend Troy Fountain officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM at Ward Wilson Funeral Home prior to the service.
