NANCY  KEY  WARD

 

ABBEVILLE. . .Nancy Key Mitchell Ward, a resident of Abbeville, died Friday afternoon, May 16, 2014, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility. She was 95.

            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 19, 2014, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ryan Johnson and Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Monday in the Family Life Building.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Abbeville Building Fund, Phase I, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310.

            Mrs. Ward was born and reared in Headland, daughter of the late Ira Thad Mitchell and Lucille Nesbitt Mitchell. She was a 1937 graduate of the Henry County High School (now Headland High School), and attended Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham. Mrs. Ward moved to Abbeville in 1941 following her marriage to Ted Ward.  She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, where she served as a past president of the W.M.U., and taught Sunday School in the Primary Department for many years. Mrs. Ward was a charter member of the Abbeville Garden Club and a former member of the Matrons Club. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and needlework. Her special joy in life was growing flowers which she generously shared with neighbors and friends. She and her husband enjoyed traveling, especially in their retirement years.  Mrs. Ward was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Robert (Ted) Ward, Sr., a daughter-in-law, Sandra Ward, and a brother, William (Bill) Mitchell.

            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Nancy Rose Ward, Decatur, GA; and Sally Ward Turner (Albert), Hoover, AL; two sons, Robert Ward, Wetumpka, AL; and Bill Ward (Maureen), Lawrenceville, GA; a sister, Betty Wagoner, Troy, AL; a sister-in-law, Betty Mitchell Palmer, Headland; nine grandchildren, Shay Atchison (Brett), Beth Tobias (Josh), Ashley Ward (Nate Starkey), Hayden Kelly (Craig), Ted Ward, Michael Ward, AnneMarie Ward, Nick Turner, and Lesley Turner; five great-grandchildren.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be Michael Ward, Ted Ward, Josh Tobias, Brett Atchison, Nate Starkey, and Craig Kelly.
