 Peter Andrew Murray


Peter Andrew “Pete” Murray, of Dothan, died Monday, September 8, 2014. He was 78.


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Rev. John Baxter and Rev. Joe Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 until 10:45 Thursday prior to service time.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Pete’s honor to Denton Road United Methodist Church, 2410 Denton Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


Mr. Murray was born September 28, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late James and Marguerite Murray.  The U.S. Army stationed him in the south during the Korean Crisis.  He fell in love with a southern girl and the south.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 31 years.  Service and involvement was important to Pete. He was the Alabama state president of National Association of Letter Carriers for seven years, an officer in PTA’s, and on the board of the credit union. He loved to hunt and to fish. Mr. Murray was an active member of Denton Road United Methodist Church for 56 years.


Pete was not talkative unless you asked about his family.  Survivors include his wife of 57 years, June Murray of Dothan; three children, Shanda Hickman of Dalton, GA, Brent and Jan Murray of Dothan and Crystal and Mike Lewis of Dothan; six grandchildren, Matthew and Ross Hickman, Elizabeth and Andrew Murray and Claire and Hayes Lewis; a brother and sister-in-law, Johnny  and Ann Murray of Clanton; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Imogene Marshall, Virginia Johnson, Betty Newsome, Margaret and Bob Smith,  Elaine  and Edward Woodham and Judy and Charlie Burg; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Matthew Hickman, Ross Hickman, Andrew Murray, Hayes Lewis, Rick Scales and Charles Jordan.
