RALEIGH   THURSTON  SNELL


 


BERTHA COMMUNITY…Raleigh Thurston Snell, a resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, died Friday night, February 14, 2014, at the home of a son, Greg Snell, in Daviston, Alabama.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 17, 2014, in the New Hope Baptist Church with Reverend Shane Traylor and Reverend Max Todd officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Billy R. Grantham, 826 County Road 7, Skipperville, AL 36374.  


            Mr. Snell was born November 12, 1923, to the late James Ellis Snell and Laura Davis Snell in the Asbury Community of Dale County. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Snell owned and operated a service station in Ozark, and was employed at Ft. Rucker and by the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He also worked with a construction company that built J. C. Penny Stores in Dothan, Pensacola, and Mobile. Mr. Snell retired as the Manager of the Walker Thrift Store in Ozark.


            In August 1960, he committed his life to Christ and united with the New Hope Baptist Church in the Bertha Community where he was elected Deacon, and served in that capacity until January, 2014. Mr. Snell also served as church and Associational Training Union Director and as an Adult Sunday School Teacher.


            In addition to his parents, Mr. Snell was preceded in death by three sisters, Jewell Hughes, Georgia Hughes, and Elma Spivey, and two brothers, Cullen Snell, and Clyde Snell, a niece, Linda Childers, and nephew, Gener Hughes.


            Surviving relatives include his wife of sixty-four years, Mattie Lois (Peggy) Barefield Snell; two sons, Grant Snell (Pam), Texas City, Texas; and Greg Snell (Glenda), Daviston, AL; a sister, Ocie Brown, Ozark; Grandchildren include, Jason Branch (Shana), Jeffrey Branch (Fiance’ Lindsay), and Jarrett Branch, Randy Martin (Sherri), and John Martin (Melissa); great-grandchildren, Kaden Branch, Gunnar McDaniel, Jewell, Raven, Lily and Krislyn Martin; a niece, Sheila Rowe, and four nephews, Kenneth Hughes (June), and Sonny Hughes (Myra), J.T. Brown (Carolyn), and Jimmy Brown (Cheryl); numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.


            Mr. Snell loved his Lord, his family, his church, his community, and his pets, especially Harry, his cat of five years. He enjoyed fishing and talking and laughing with his friends. In return, Mr. Snell was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Deacons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
