REVEREND  CHARLES  H.  BARKER

 

DOTHAN . . . Reverend Charles H. Barker, a resident of Dothan, died Saturday morning, January 5, 2013, in a Dothan hospital. He was 88.

            Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Monday, January 7, 2013, in the Heritage Baptist Church with Reverend Van Clack, Reverend Coley M. Holloway and Reverend Winford Gulledge officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, between Headland and Dothan. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M Monday in the church sanctuary.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Baptist Church, 1951 Westgate Parkway, Dothan, AL 36303.

            Reverend Barker was born and reared in Coffee County, near Elba, son of the late Charlie Barker and Cora Maddox Barker. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Reverend Barker was a graduate of the Baptist College of Florida in Graceville where he received a diploma in Pastoral Training.  He formerly served as Pastor of Central Baptist Church of Phenix City; Center Baptist Church of Webb; Union Baptist Church of Slocomb; Beulah Baptist Church of Dothan; Enterprise Baptist Church of Ashford and Adoniram Baptist Church of Abbeville. Reverend Barker served as a Southern Baptist Minister fifty-four before his retirement and was presently a member of Heritage Baptist Church.  He had also been employed by Jimmy’s Heating and Cooling. His hobbies were rabbit hunting and raising beagles.

            Reverend Barker was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Audria Stevens Barker, a sister, Odell Reeves, and two brothers, George Barker and Dick Barker.

            Surviving relatives include his wife, Roberta Gomillion Barker, Dothan; two sons, Jerome Barker and wife, Jerry Lynn, Birmingham; Steven Barker and wife, Kathy, Lake Charles, LA; a step-daughter, Lynn Sanders and husband, Larry, Cairo, GA; a step-son, Jimmy Newsom and wife, Sharon, Dothan; a sister, Sybil Plummer, Cleveland, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Katie Barker, Harrison, GA; two grandchildren, Renae Helmke and Allison Barker; several step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, Kaylee Skinner and Emily Helmke; several step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

            Serving as active pallbearers will be Reverend Otis Derrah, Reverand Ricky Plummer, Reverend Robert Zbinden, Reverend Sammy Turner, Jimmy Hatfield, Ron Battles and Bud McInnis.
